Dr Joe Bright

Researcher in Radio Astronomy

Dr Joe Bright is a researcher in radio astronomy based at The University of Oxford in the Astrophysics sub-department. Joe completed a Physics MSc at The University of Warwick and a DPhil in astrophysics at The University of Oxford, before holding postdoctoral positions at Northwestern University and University of California Berkeley.  Joe is the project scientist for the Breakthrough Listen program at the 64 meter diameter Murriyang radio telescope at the Parkes Observatory in Australia. Murriyang is the largest single dish telescope in the southern hemisphere, allowing access to the galactic centre and plane, along with southern nearby stars, at high angular resolution and sensitivity. Breakthrough Listen has utilised various receivers on Murriyang, and is currently able to record the entire 700 - 4000 MHz bandwidth of the ultra-wideband low receiver at 2 Hz resolution. Joe is interested in novel techniques in radio astronomy, both on single dishes and interferometers. As well as his interest in SETI, Joe studies radio transients from naturally occurring astrophysical sources.
